Gold Star Standards of Excellence

Breathe Easy conducts the Gold Star Standards of Excellence recognition program annually to encourage and support Maine’s hospitals, institutions of higher education and behavioral health organizations in addressing smoking and tobacco use by creating and maintaining smoke and tobacco-free policies. The voluntary program is ten evidence-based, environment-specific standards for organizations to meet through written, sustainable policies and procedures.

Hospitals, institutions of higher education and behavioral health organizations are committed to providing as healthy and safe of an environment as possible for their patients, students, faculty, clients, staff and visitors, this program gives these organizations recognition for leading the way by supporting tobacco-free environments. Those organizations who have received awards in past years are encouraged to reapply for continued recognition and ongoing commitment to addressing smoking and tobacco use.

New for 2019 – Announcement on Higher Education and Behavioral Health Programs

In an effort to celebrate the successes of our Gold Star Standard of Excellence (GSSE) awardees with wider support from champions and stakeholders in the fields of tobacco treatment and prevention, MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence (CTI) has chosen to combine the 2019 Higher Education and Behavioral Health Gold Star Standards of Excellence programs and will host the annual celebration during CTI’s Annual Treatment & Prevention Conference on June 18, 2019.

This change was based on District Tobacco Prevention Partner and past GSSE awardee feedback as well as CTI’s desire to more publicly acknowledge the ongoing policy and procedure work of Higher Education and Behavioral Health entities so this year CTI will be offering scholarships to attend the Annual Tobacco Treatment and Prevention Conference to those Higher Education and Behavioral Health entities that submit an application for the 2019 GSSE program.
