Breathe Easy conducts the Gold Star Standards of Excellence recognition program annually to encourage and support Maine’s hospitals, institutions of higher education and behavioral health organizations in addressing smoking and tobacco use by creating and maintaining smoke and tobacco-free policies. The voluntary program is ten evidence-based, environment-specific standards for organizations to meet through written, sustainable policies and procedures.
Hospitals, institutions of higher education and behavioral health organizations are committed to providing as healthy and safe of an environment as possible for their patients, students, faculty, clients, staff and visitors, this program gives these organizations recognition for leading the way by supporting tobacco-free environments. Those organizations who have received awards in past years are encouraged to reapply for continued recognition and ongoing commitment to addressing smoking and tobacco use.
Please see the 2020 Program Timelines below for specifics for each of the three environments, for additional information, including the latest standards are available through the environment specific links.
