Gold Star Standards
The annual Gold Star Standards of Excellence recognition program encourages and supports Maine’s institutions of higher education that are addressing smoking and tobacco use by creating and maintaining smoke and tobacco-free policies. Institutions of higher education are committed to providing as healthy and safe of an environment as possible for their students, faculty, staff and visitors.Congratulations to the 2025 Gold Star Standards of Excellence Awardees
48 Maine Organizations, including 7 Institutions of Higher Education, are being recognized this year for their commitment to addressing tobacco use, secondhand smoke exposure, and nicotine dependence.

2026 Higher Education GSSE Standards
- Platinum: 10 Standards
- Gold: 8-9 Standards
- Silver: 6-7 Standards
- Bronze: 5 Standards
